BEES: The Other Way
Next class midsummer. Email or call and we'll set a date. We've done a bee class
every month all spring. I had no idea so many people want to know this info. I'm glad
to share it. Just ask and I'll start the signup list for the next one. -- Jacqueline
Friendly Haven Rise Farm
The farm is 35 min. NE of Portland OR
or ten minutes east of Battle Ground, WA
Class goes from 10 - 4. We may have sleepover room if you're traveling a distance.
Bring any bee equipment you have or
dress for being around bees (loose jeans, sweatshirt)
Bring a bag lunch (pollen provided, yum!)
$50 per person
if you've taken the class before you can audit it again for $10
I'll show you
* The bee family
* My Swarm-Catching kit -- I'm ready to go on a minute's notice
* Different ways to move bees so they're less stressed
* How to care for them once they're home
* What top bar hives look like inside
* Mistakes I have made (and hopefully learned from)
* Approaching bees from a biodynamic perspective
* The fallacy of purchased queen bees
(who are not natural true queens)
* The weakened gene pool
* True nutrition for bees
* Communicating with bees and developing relationships with hives
* Top bar hives, cow dung hives and straw hives
* Rehoming swarms
* Low stress ways to remove bees from buildings
* Educating the public about alternative bee paradigms
While I'm not an expert by any means, I'll share what I know.
Hopefully others will share their experiences, too, and we can
move the local bee knowledge in our area further along. I've had
honeybees on the farm for four years and am continually learning
more about the little native bees, too.
Did you know we have three HUNDRED native bees in this area?
And don't ask me my opinion about CCD unless you're willing to listen
to my rant about how humans have been doing wrong by bees for the
last century or so. I'm happy to share that info with you if you do ask.
Just know that it's a 20 minute run-on sentence every time I open
my mouth to answer that question.
All my hives come from swarms and are feral. I like the
mixed gene pool that comes from that.
If you want to attend, pop me back an email and let me know.
I'll send you directions to the farm.
